VALDIMAR GUNNARSSON AT SELFOSS LIBRARY

This coming Saturday, a special event will take place at the Bókasafn Árborgar Library in Selfoss – a meeting with Icelandic author Valdimar Gunnarsson, who will present his latest book. It is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in literature and history, listen to the author, ask questions, and learn about the process of creating his work.

About the Author

Valdimar Gunnarsson is an experienced teacher, historian, and researcher from the Eyjafjarðarsýsla region in northern Iceland. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Icelandic language and history in 1971. Over the years, he worked as a teacher at Menntaskólinn á Akureyri, and after retirement, he focused on genealogical research and the history of Icelandic emigrants for the IcelandicRoots portal.
His research interests particularly include the period when many Icelanders emigrated from their homeland and the history of Icelandic communities abroad.

About the Book

The book Gunnarsson will present is titled Utanveltumaður and tells the story of an extraordinary Eyfirðing (a resident of northern Iceland) who traveled west, studied abroad – including in the United Kingdom and Paris – and then returned to Iceland in 1914 at about 60 years of age. Although he had ambitious plans for the development of his country, he did not gain recognition, remaining far ahead of his time.
During the event, the author will read excerpts from the book, share the story behind its creation, and discuss his fascination with Icelandic history and migration.
